MoveSpace Coverage Terms

Last updated: March 17, 2026

1. Overview

MoveSpace offers an optional supplemental coverage product called MoveSpace Coverage for moves booked through the MoveSpace marketplace. This coverage is provided and administered by the MoveSpace platform — separate from any insurance carried by the individual moving company performing your move, and separate from the FMCSA-required Released Value Protection that automatically applies to interstate moves at no cost.

This coverage supplements but does not replace the moving company's own cargo liability insurance. For interstate moves, movers are required by federal law (FMCSA) to carry cargo insurance. You can verify any mover's insurance status at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.

2. MoveSpace Coverage — Interstate Moves

MoveSpace Coverage is a supplemental customer satisfaction program available for interstate moves performed by FMCSA-registered carriers. It is not an insurance product and does not replace the moving company's cargo insurance or general liability coverage.

MoveSpace Coverage provides supplemental protection per move for fast resolution of minor damage claims. Coverage limits, deductible, and pricing are set in your booking confirmation. A minimum of 5 platform reviews is required for the mover to be eligible.

All interstate movers on the MoveSpace platform must confirm during onboarding that they maintain active cargo insurance and general liability coverage as required by FMCSA. MoveSpace Coverage is supplemental to — and does not replace — that coverage.

2a. Claims Exceeding Coverage

For claims exceeding the MoveSpace Coverage limit, customers may contact the moving company directly to pursue additional recovery. The mover's cargo insurance covers damage to belongings during transit, and their general liability insurance covers damage to property (floors, walls, doorframes, etc.). MoveSpace does not participate in or administer claims filed directly with the mover's insurance carrier.

Customers can verify any mover's insurance status at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.

2b. Deductible Waiver for Participating Movers

Movers who opt in to MoveSpace Coverage agree to waive any deductible they would otherwise charge customers on their own cargo insurance or valuation coverage for moves covered by MoveSpace Coverage, since the platform already covers the initial portion of the customer's claim up to the coverage limit. There is no fee charged to the mover for participating in MoveSpace Coverage.

3. Move Protection — Local Moves

Move Protection is available for local and intrastate moves. It provides a flat-fee coverage option with a maximum payout cap. Pricing is based on the mover's platform rating. Move Protection is not available for delivery-only services. A minimum of 5 platform reviews is required.

4. What Is NOT Covered (Exclusions)

The following are excluded from MoveSpace Coverage:

  • Vehicle and automobile damage or loss — Damage to cars, motorcycles, boats, or other vehicles during transport is covered by the mover's own cargo/auto liability insurance, not MoveSpace coverage. Verify the mover's insurance at FMCSA SAFER.
  • Traffic accidents and collisions — Damage resulting from vehicular accidents during transit is the responsibility of the mover's insurance carrier.
  • Pre-existing damage — Damage that existed before the move began, as determined by pre-move inventory documentation.
  • Items packed by the owner — Unless full professional packing service was purchased, items packed by the customer are not covered for internal damage.
  • Acts of God — Loss or damage caused by weather events, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, or other natural disasters.
  • Fine art, antiques, and items of extraordinary value — Unless specifically declared and documented in advance with agreed-upon valuation.
  • Jewelry, watches, and precious metals
  • Cash, coins, stamps, and collectibles
  • Plants, perishable goods, and live animals
  • Hazardous materials — Including but not limited to flammables, explosives, chemicals, and compressed gases.
  • Particle board and pressed wood furniture — These materials are inherently fragile and prone to damage during disassembly/reassembly.
  • Electronics not in original manufacturer packaging
  • Items not listed on the move inventory — Only items documented on the pre-move inventory or bill of lading are eligible for claims.
  • Mechanical or electrical malfunction — Items that were not in working order before the move.
  • Cosmetic damage to items with pre-existing wear

5. Claims Process

To file a claim under MoveSpace Coverage:

  1. Log in to your MoveSpace customer portal within 14 days of your move date.
  2. Navigate to your booking and select "File a Claim."
  3. Provide photos of the damage, a description of the affected items, and estimated value.
  4. The MoveSpace platform will review your claim within 5 business days.
  5. Approved claims are paid directly by the MoveSpace platform — you do not negotiate with the mover.

For vehicle damage or traffic accident claims, you must file directly with the moving company's insurance carrier. MoveSpace can provide the mover's USDOT number and insurance information upon request.

6. Mover Insurance Verification

MoveSpace verifies that interstate movers maintain active FMCSA operating authority and insurance as part of our screening process. However, insurance policies can lapse between verification checks. Customers are encouraged to independently verify their mover's current insurance status at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov before their move date.

For intrastate/local movers, insurance requirements vary by state. MoveSpace verifies state-level operating authority where applicable but does not guarantee the status of state-regulated insurance policies.

7. Limitation of Liability

MoveSpace coverage is limited to the maximum coverage amount for the applicable product (the coverage maximum or Move Protection cap). MoveSpace is not liable for losses exceeding these amounts. MoveSpace acts as a coverage administrator and is not an insurance company. This coverage does not constitute an insurance policy.

By purchasing MoveSpace coverage, you acknowledge that you have read and understood these terms, including all exclusions listed above.

8. Contact

For questions about coverage terms or to file a claim, contact the MoveSpace platform through your customer portal or email [email protected].
